Adventures of the Imagination

If you are looking for more of a specific topic or challenge our specialty camps are for you. We pride ourselves here at Congressional on our large variety of Specialty Camp offerings and are very excited for our new additions this summer. From cooking to clay, you will be led in our specialty camps by an enthusiastic staff ready for summer fun. Many of these programs are led by our very own Congressional teachers. All specialty camps are coed with the exception of Girl Power. Campers will remain with the specific specialty groups throughout the entire day. They will have access to the pool, and lunches and snacks will be provided.

Now, more than ever, Mother Nature needs pioneering kids to lead the way to a cleaner, greener world. Learn about recycling, ecology, the environment and biomes through hands-on activities and experiments. Campers will also develop their own project to show the whole camp that it’s easy being green!

Have you ever asked the question, “How does this work?” Well, this is the camp for you. Using hands-on investigation and learning, we will look at things like velcro, batteries, locks, sprinklers, bar codes and more. We will also look at the link between different inventions through time. Be ready for the answers to your questions and many more.

Time Travelers

Drawing, painting, candle-making, friendship bracelets, key-chains, clay, papier-mâché… everything arts and crafts, from the past and present. All of the mess and creativity that can fit in 2 weeks of fun crafty activities..

Get ready for some hands on learning throughout 40 acres of the Congressional campus and beyond. We will explore creatures on land, in the air and under the sea. We’ll learn about the life cycles, species and habitats of many popular creatures. Special visitors will allow us to experience them up close. We will create animal art, snacks and make our own take-home habitats. This program will also include field trips to the National Zoo, Baltimore Aquarium and more.

 

Congo Chemists

Session 5     August 9 to August 20                   Fee $740

Campers get ready to don your lab jacket and goggles, we are going into a two week chemistry
odyssey. We will get to smell, touch, hear, and see the three states of matter and how they change. Campers will get to make their own rock candy, slime, bouncing ball, crystals, lava lamps and much more.
Campers will come home with plenty to talk about and share at the dinner table.

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Join us this summer as we learn exactly what it takes to make it in the world of the performing arts. Campers will study the history of theater dating back to the Ancient Greeks, build sets and props, learn lighting and sound design, and write and perform their own skits and plays. In addition, actual theater professionals will be on hand to teach future thespians using firsthand knowledge of the DC performing arts community.

Scrapbooking

Capture memories in creative keepsake albums to share with friends and family. Campers will learn to design their own exciting layouts and themed pages. They will work with photos incorporating family moments, favorite places to visit and finally, what they love about Congressional Camp.

 

Clay Exploration

Come jump in the “mud” at Congressional Camp!  Two weeks of clay, hand-building and pottery.  Turn slabs to sculptures, coils to cups and lumps into lovelies.   Explore surface decoration with carving, glazing and more.  Come take the pottery wheel for a spin and join in on a “cool” clay class. 

 

Lego World - City Edition (new for 2010)

This exciting new session will make any Lego fan’s dream come true. This unique opportunity will allow campers to design and build as far as their imagination will take them. This one week session will focus on the City collection of Legos including the popular fire, police and construction sets. Campers will have their chance to assemble their very own Lego town.

Lego World - Star Wars Edition (new for 2010)

This exciting new session will make any Lego fan’s dream come true. This unique opportunity will allow campers to design and build as far as their imagination will take them. This one week session will focus on the Star Wars series of Legos. Campers will have their chance to assemble and explore both classic Star Wars sets, as well as the new Clone Wars series. May the force be with you!

Young Engineers

Rising third to sixth graders in the fall of 2010

Session 5    August 9 to August 20                    Fee $740

Young Engineers will spend their days focusing on interesting and educational projects. Campers will have
the chance to build an Erector set roller coaster, carnival rides, experiment with building blocks and work on other exciting projects. At the end of the session, you will build and race your own radio controlled race car in the fourth annual Congressional Camp 500!

 

Remote Control World

Rising third to sixth graders in the fall of 2010

Session 4     July 26 to August 6                          Fee $780

Trains, Planes and Automobiles with some boats and rockets propel us forward in this thrilling, two week
program that will introduce campers to all types of remote control vehicles and the physics that goes with
them. Campers will spend time building and designing their own RC car tracks and races. We will learn the initial concepts of flight and fly our own planes and helicopters. We will even take our adventure to the camp pool for some boat challenges. Next up, we will be taking aim at space, with campers designing, building and decorating their own rocket…Get ready for blast off!

 

Movie Making

Lights, camera, action! Aspiring actors and movie makers will have a blast at this year’s movie making camp! Learn the fundamentals of movie making, lighting, blocking and script writing. You will work with other campers to make your very own movie, which you will take home on DVD! You will be sure to give this camp “two thumbs up!”

CSI Congo

Rising fifth to ninth graders in the fall of 2010

Get ready for an eye opening and hands-on experience this summer. Campers will investigate model
crime scenes and use various techniques including photography, fingerprinting, interviewing, crime scene
diagramming, chemical analysis, DNA analysis, special lighting and more. Join us as we search campus for clues and solve our crimes!

Congo Chefs Challenge Day was so successful last year that we’ve turned it into a week-long
event. Each day will be filled with competitions that will test your kitchen skills from measuring to mixing,
from grating cheese to separating an egg. Then you will use the ingredients from the competitions along with other special ingredients to create your own dishes – WITH NO RECIPES TO GUIDE YOU! This is the perfect program for children who want to experiment in the kitchen. Campers with serious food allergies, please contact the camp office.

 

Hands-On Science

Love to explore? Want to get your hands messy? Come with us to explore, create and discover some of the many wonders of science! Our campus is booming with exciting science projects just waiting to be discovered. We will explore our creek habitat and the surrounding animal and plant life. The sky is the limit!

 

Girl Power

This stimulating two week camp, offered only to girls, will begin a journey to self-empowerment. Through participation in challenge course events, utilizing technological resources, and examining how females are portrayed in the media, campers will develop teamwork, self-confidence and personal identity. This dynamic camp will also include workplace field trips and guest appearances by positive women in the workforce. Campers will have the choice to develop their own leadership style as they take turns being “boss” for the day. Finally, the team will work together to produce a final CD that chronicles their experience.

 

Congo Chefs - Gourmet around the World/Just Desserts

Explore the full range of cooking and food preparation from basic snacks to outrageous desserts, from familiar fare to international cuisine. Spend two weeks expanding your culinary horizons in this fun, hands-on cooking camp. Learn basic techniques such as measuring and mixing along with basic kitchen safety while attempting a variety of recipes. When it’s all done, you will have a complete cook book of recipes to take home and enjoy all year long. Campers with serious food allergies please contact the camp office.

Congo Chefs - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Discover the versatility of food with this fun cooking camp. Each day we’ll take a different theme ingredient and explore how it can be used in preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner. Three different recipes for three different times of day with one main ingredient! As with our other cooking camps, you will learn basic techniques such as measuring and mixing, along with basic kitchen safety. When we’re done, you’ll have a complete cookbook of all the recipes so you can make breakfast in bed for Mom and Dad, or take charge of dinner on a busy night. Beading

Rising fifth to ninth graders in the fall of 2010

Learn how to make bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and belts in this one of a kind program. You will explore weaving, twisting and wrapping using a variety of beads and colored wire. Only the finest materials will be used – no plastic beads allowed.
