Bus Attendant

About the role
Bus Attendants help provide a safe, orderly, and friendly ride for students by partnering with the driver to manage boarding, supervision, and dismissal at each stop. You’ll follow route manifests and school procedures, keep aisles/seating organized, and communicate professionally with families and the Transportation Office. 

This is a part-time split shift position with normal hours being 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 3:00–6:00 p.m. Additional hours may be available as well as the program requires.

Responsibilities

  • Greet riders, take attendance, and verify boarding/deboarding at assigned stops per the route manifest.
  • Support safe loading/unloading; maintain clear aisles and appropriate seating; uphold seat belt/child-restraint use per camp policy.
  • Reinforce ridership expectations and inclusive behavior; de-escalate minor conflicts and redirect as needed.
  • Maintain constant supervision during the ride; conduct end-of-run sweeps for belongings and sleepers; help keep the bus tidy.
  • Coordinate with campus staff during arrival/dismissal staging to keep groups moving smoothly and on time.
  • Complete incident/accident reports accurately; maintain confidentiality regarding students and families.
  • Meet school transportation policies and applicable Virginia safety guidelines.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality; be punctual, prepared, and flexible; perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Office or designee.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children (after-school, camp, classroom aide, coaching, or similar).
  • Calm, reliable, and coachable teammate with strong communication and group-management skills.
  • Situational awareness and sound judgment in a moving/transport environment.
  • Pediatric First Aid/CPR (or ability to obtain before start and maintain throughout employment).
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather and stepping on/off buses frequently; able to assist with light items.

Eligibility: Must be at least 16 years old by the first day of employment and able to pass required background/screening checks per School and Virginia regulations.
