Counselor in Training (CIT)

About the role
The Counselor-in-Training program is a hands-on leadership experience for high school students who want to learn how great camps run. CITs support Counselors and Junior Counselors with group activities and logistics while developing skills in teamwork, communication, and youth leadership. This is an unpaid, volunteer role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Counselors with daily activities, transitions, swimming, lunch, field trips, and special events.
  • Help set up/clean up materials and maintain orderly activity spaces, support group movement, and logistics.
  • Promote a fun, inclusive, and safety-first environment; promptly report concerns, hazards, or incidents to staff.
  • Follow camp procedures and directions from Counselors and camp leadership.
  • Support individual camper needs by following staff guidance and established plans.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality; be punctual, prepared, and flexible; perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or designee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Genuine interest in working with children
  • Positive, reliable, coachable teammate with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Calm under pressure; receptive to feedback and able to adapt in outdoor/indoor settings.
  • Helpful skills: arts, sports, outdoor education, STEM, games, or similar activity interests.
  • Commitment to inclusion and respectful group behavior.

Eligibility: Rising high-school sophomore able to meet required background/screening checks per Virginia regulations.
